Un guide très complet des oiseaux du continent africain. Certes, étant donné l'ampleur du sujet, il est un peu gros pour traîner partout avec soi à pied sur le terrain. Mais il reste vraiment facile à utiliser, avec un index par type d'oiseau au début pour s'y retrouver, et pour chaque espèce la carte de répartition, une illustration et les principales caractéristiques permettant une identification aisée. Nous l'avons utilisé lors d'un voyage en Ethiopie où il nous a vraiment rendu service, et l'intérêt est évidemment de pouvoir le réutiliser lors de prochains voyages dans d'autres parties du continent, contrairement à un guide plus localisé.
Excellent ouvrage
Très bien fait, illustrations claires et précises qui permettent d'identifier les oiseaux. très utile pour profiter pleinement d'un voyage en Afrique, au-delà des "big five".
Ce livre est une surprenante nouveauté de l'édition Struik. Il traite en effet de tout les oiseaux de l'Afrique subsaharienne, c'est donc un guide de terrain couvrant au total plus de 2100 espèces, dont certaines n'avaient jamais était traité jusqu'alors! Un record. Cartes et textes sont opposés aux planches. Des codes de couleur permettent de selectionner plus vite quel groupe d'oiseaux on cherche. Je n'ai pas mis 5 étoiles à cause des illustrations, celles de Norman Arlott sont d'une excellente qualité, mais les planches de Peter Hayman sont vraiment médiocres. Il n'empèche que ce livre est réellement passionnant et unique en son genre. A avoir.
I used this book extensively while birding in Southern, Central, and Eastern Africa for a number of years. It's really essential if you are planning to do any birding anywhere in the Congo basin, Angola, Malawi, or northern Zambia, all incredible localities for bird life. No other book covers these countries as well as this book. The book is heavy, but compact and well organized. I had no problems with it in the field. In the second edition, some of the maps and plates have been updated. The new plates are especially helpful on the cryptic genera such as the larks, cisticolas, weavers, and bradypterus warblers, as most of the plates in the first edition were terrible.I would still have quite a bit to suggest for a potential third edition. Many of the maps are still flawed and provide little insight into seasonal movements. The book could also contain a few more details on taxonomy without adding much bulk. I would really love to see an updated Central Africa field Guide that covers Angola and the Congo Basin south to the Zambezi River. It would be a nice complement to recently updated guides on Western, Eastern, and Southern Africa.
This book has taken on a monumental task by introducing the entire bird fauna of a huge region in one volume.I was sceptical before seeing it, thinking that quantity would probably take priority over quality. It did not!For a start, it is surprisingly detailed and well-organized. The editors have resisted the usual temptetion of cramming too many similar or small species on one page. Usually there are just 5-6 species on each page, sometimes 7 or just 3-4.What this means is that illustrations are big enough to show detail, plus there are often 4 or more different illustrations for the same 1 species, showing different colour morphs, juveniles, females, birds in flight, head or wing details, etc.It also means that the maps and text for each species could be placed on the page facing its picture.The text itself is still amazingly detailed for a book of this scope, giving the essential information on distribution, appearence, habitat, status and voice.Too good to be true? Well, some of the illustrations show important colour or pattern details wrongly, even contradicting description in the text - in these cases the text tends be more accurate, so have a look at that one, too!But all in all, this book is a great value introduction to the bird fauna of Africa, though perhaps unsurprisingly, I found it a bit too bulky to carry on the field.Note that while shown here as out of print, another edition of the very same book by another publisher is still readily available here!
I live as far from Africa as you can get and have never been there. Still, I am interested in African birds. When I read a book such as Chris Goodie's "The Jewel Hunter" I want to be able to find out something about the birds mentioned in the book. I own two older Collins guides, Willams and Arlott's "A Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa" and Prozesky's "A Field Guide to the Birds of Southern Africa". These are nice books, but it is much more convenient to leaf through "Birds of Africa South of the Sahara: Second Editon". The Sinclair and Ryan is a larger format book with text on the left and the excellent color illustrations on the facing page while the Collins books have the color plates together in the center of the book--separated from the text descriptions of the birds. However, if I were actually birdwatching in Africa, I might balk at carrying a 3 lb (1.36kg) book like the Sinclair and Ryan guide.
Book is in perfect, brand new condition. It is heavy, but I will take it with me to Uganda anyway.
The best book but too heavy to take.
